I started early...

I started early - Took my Dog-
and visited the sea.

The Mermaids in the Basement
Came out to look at me.

Emily Dickinson

While Beloved and my children slept I eased out of bed, quickly dressed and headed down the pathway to the sea. I left alone but the ghosts of all my old dogs followed me, and I almost looked for a tennis ball.

The sun had just risen and the beach belonged solely to me. Barefoot, I made my way around the point, away from the protected waters, over the rocks to the open expanse of sea of the back beach.

Slowly, lazily, I meandered, enjoying sand underfoot, gentle sun gilding, scents of eucalypt carried from the forests at the back of Lorne, before returning to my sleeping household, just in time to go into the bedroom to fetch my baby as she woke.
